Betty was the youngest of four children born to Elmer and Emma Larson.
She graduated from St. Olaf College in 1948 with a degree in social work. During the summer following graduation, she bicycled through Europe and met her future husband, an Englishman named Wally Broadbent, at a youth hostel tent camp in Paris in 1948.
After corresponding for six months, he emigrated from England to America and they married in 1949.
Wally had a long career with Northwestern Bell Telephone, beginning in Minnesota.
In 1964 they moved to Omaha, where Betty worked for many years at Bergan Mercy Hospital as a receptionist in the Emergency Department.

Betty had a fun loving, lively personality and was the life of the party.
She was a creative, free spirt who loved to sing. She was athletic and excelled in swimming, tennis, and golf.
She and Wally loved the arts and took their children to art museums, plays, concerts and operas. Betty and Wally instilled the love of travel in their children and took them on many camping trips throughout the country.
She always encouraged her children's and grandchildren curiosity and interest, and she often told them, "the world is your oyster" and carpe diem."
Betty was an avid reader and enjoyed politics and current events.
She was a generous and passionate supporter of social justice causes.
