Alem Marr Brittain was born on September 17, 1809 in Light Street, Pennsylvania to John and Margaret (Albertson) Brittain. He married Jemima P. Goodfellow on April 6, 1834. Alem died on November 9, 1889 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

Rev. Alem Brittain was born near Light Street, Pennsylvania, September 17, 1809, and departed this life at his residence in Bloomsburg (Columbia County) on November 9, 1889. By reasons of the hardships of the itinerancy and burden of four score he had become 'Such a one as Paul, the aged.' Not until the morning of his decease was it necessary to call a physician. Just as the evening shades veiled, the Master called for him.
The funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church in Bloomsburg, November 13. Devout en with quiet decorum carried the body to Berwick Cemetery and laid it away with fraternal affection beside the body of his infant daughter, asleep in Jesus now 40 years, there to await the resurrection of the just.
The deceased was of English ancestry, son of John, son of Zeboeth, son of William, son of Samuel(?) [James E. Brittain states that Samuel is a mistake which can be shown in other data] who immigrated to Staten Island before the Revolutionary War. His grand-father (Zeboeth) and two grand-uncles (they would be Nathaniel and Samuel) fought for independence. His mother was Margaret Albertson of New Jersey. He was married April 6, 1834 to Miss Jemima Goodfellow of Clearfield county, who thenceforth shared his toils and survives with four sons and one daughter, Mrs. Rev. Ebenezer A. Smith of N. E. Conference. Mr. Brittain traveled the Philipsburg circuit then lying in Center, Clearfield, and Elk Counties, 3 weeks round being 300 miles in extent. His compensation was $5.00 per month.
