Pensa was born east of Kaseyville, on a small farm in which her family, the Britt's homesteaded. She attended grade school in Kaseyville and high school in Fayette. Pensa and her family attended church at the Hebron. Pensa often told us stories about playing on the hills and bare fields at Thomas Hill Lake, swimming in the creeks that created the lake and often talked of walking behind the house with buckets to fetch water for her dad and brothers while they plowed the fields with their team of horses.
Lenon Britt had strong religious beliefs. Pensa often said she remembered her dad plowing around the indian burials on the ridge behind the homeplace. No one was allowed to step foot on their holy ground. Often she talked about walking from the homeplace to the Hebron church.

After his term was up in the military in 1946, Pensa and Lee returned to Missouri.
