Born in Red River County, Texas Died Jan 20, 1920 in Van Alstyne, Collin Co, Texas (note by Richard Hollis, Van Alstyne is in Grayson County)
Hiram grew up in the wilds of Collin Co, Texas. He was the 5th child of a family of seven children. He grew to be an accomplished fiddle player and an expert dancer. Riding horses, fancy roping, and riding tricks were favorite sports. He was also an expert marksman. As time went by, he became a cattle drover, driving cattle to Abilene, Kansas. Hiram's first discharge from the Confederate Army, Capt. William Rhea's Company D, was the 13th of June, 1862, for being under age (17), after having served 10 months. He re-enlisted under Gen. Gano's Regiment, and served out the rest of the war. He was five feet and 10 inches tall, with black eyes, dark complexion, black hair and dashing physique. He was popular with the ladies. He met then married Dicie Caroline Boone April 15, 1863. They had 8 chldren. Hiram was a cotton farmer by trade. Later Hiram took over his father's general merchandise store at Stony Point. After Dicie died, Hiram married Susan L. Smith Bonner who lived in Indian Territory, chickasaw Nation. Five more children were born.
