Samuel Lockhart Briggs born near Zanesville Newton Twp Washington (now Muskingum) Co OH in 1810 was the second child of Robert & Mary Polly (Lockhart) Briggs.

During the spring of 1813, a group of allied families including several members of the Briggs and Lockharts left central Ohio for the Illinois Territory. Initially refuge was taken at Fort Russell just north of Edwardsville in Madison Co IL. It was during this time, that Robert Briggs and several other members of his family left for service in Ferguson's Company during the war of 1812. Returning safely, Robert Briggs moved his young family to the West Fork of Shoal Creek in what would become part of Montgomery County.
