She was born to the late Rayfield Sr. and Addie Bethew Peele, on June 27, 1931, in Woodland. Mary's three siblings were also born of this union; sister, Addie P. Strother; and two brothers, Rayfield Peele, Jr. and Joe Peele all of whom preceded her in death. Mary was educated in North Carolina and later relocated to the Bronx, N.Y. in her late teens.
Mary had four children from previous marriages, Albert Jr. (deceased); Christopher, Vivian, and Ray.
On June 30, 1969, she was united in holy matrimony to William Bridges where she remained a faithful and loving wife until her death.
Unconventional in her ability to shatter stereotypes, Mary worked in a variety of male-dominated jobs including as a New York City Cab Driver before becoming a Traffic Enforcement Agent for the City of New York for nearly 15 years, and later as a Bus Operator for the N.Y.C. Transit Authority until her illness and retirement.
Mary was a member of Washington Missionary Baptist Church and an Eastern Star. She loved to travel and was also a great supporter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) – especially Howard University in Washington, DC were her granddaughter, LaShawn, attended. She and William were affectionately known by members of HU's Showtime Marching Band as ""Grandma and Grandpa."" Mary loved her family and often referred to them as her ""Flower Garden.""
Mary is survived by her husband, William D. Bridges, of Kings Mountain; three children, Christopher Phillips, Vivian P. McDonald (George) both of Murfreesboro, and Ray B. Reed, of Hackensack, N.J.; a favorite granddaughter who was ""like a daughter"", LaShawn H.
