Blowout on Truck Tire Cause of Fatal Accident Monday
Party Enroute to Omaha On Business Trip
The community of Bayard was shocked and saddened Monday noon when word was received that M. J. Hallinan, attorney, and John Brideson, stock man and retired farmer, had been instantly killed in an auto accident as they were enroute to Omaha.
Mr. Brideson and James Corbett, Bayard druggist, were accompanying Mr. Hallinan on a business trip, Mr. Brideson to investigate the cattle market as he had several loads ready to sell. When about fourteen miles west of Atlantic on highway No. 32 and just a short distance over the Cass-Pottawatamie county line they were about to meet a bread truck when a front tire on the truck blew out, causing it to swerve and crash into the Hallinan Buick.
The truck was traveling at considerable speed and crashed into the sedan, grinding it into a tangled mass of wreckage against the heavy guard posts and cables, as shown in the accompanying photograph.
Mr. Hallinan at the wheel and Mr. Brideson in the rear seat met instant death, while Mr. Corbett, who was in the front seat with the driver received scalp wounds, cuts and bruises, and was taken to Atlantic Hospital where he is making a satisfactory recovery.
Mr. Hallinan was a prominent lawyer and acted as general advisor to the people of the community. No man in Bayard had so much of other peoples' business intrusted to his care. He is survived by his wife, Mollie Cain Hallinan.
Mr. Brideson was a well known retired farmer, having gained a wide reputation as a stock raiser. He owned a number of fine farms in the vicinity of Bayard. He is survived by his wife. Nellie Manville-Bridson, three sons, Everett, Winfred and Louis and one daughter, Freda. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved families.
The Hallinans and Bridesons have been next door neighbors for many years so their loss is not only that of a relative but a life long friend as well.
Mr. Brideson's funeral was held Wednesday, at the M. E. church where he was a faithful attendant for many years. Mr. Hallinan's funeral was held Thursday morning at St. Patrick's church.
