Dorothy Brice Ahrens, 84, of Louisville, Ky., returned to her Heavenly Father and Savior on Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Pallative Care Unit in Baptist Hospital East. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Kenneth F. Ahrens; her parents, Florence and Harry J. Brice; and her brother, Richard J. Brice. She was born on April 21, 1921, in Erie, PA. Dorothy attended Saint Anne's Catholic Grade School, Erie East High School, and went to Mercyhurst College for one year. After her marriage in 1943, while her husband was serving overseas in the Army, she contracted tuberculosis and spent two years in a sanitorium. After her recovery, she began raising a family. In 1952, Dorothy and Ken were transferred to Louisville with the General Electric Company at Appliance Park. She was a devoted wife and mother dedicating her life to her family and their well being. Her faith in God enabled her to bear personal trials including being a breast cancer survivor. As an original member of St. Albert the Great Parish she devoted her personal time to volunteering and service to others. Over the last 25 years, she was a member of the St. Albert the Great's Women's Altar Society, served as a Eucharistic Minister delivering communion to shut-ins and residents of Jefferson Manor and Jefferson Place Nursing Homes, as well as volunteering at Jefferson Manor Nursing Home, Episcopal Nursing Home and Camelot (formerly Anne Lynne) Nursing Home and also Wesley Warehouse. She was a member of ANAWIM Prayer Group, Mary's Little Flock Prayer Group, and St. Al's Aces Senior Group. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, David Kenneth Ahrens, and Dr. Douglas Ahrens and his wife, Benita Easley Ahrens, all of Louisville, Kenneth Brice Ahrens and his wife Katherine Graves Ahrens of Floyd Knobs, Ind.; her daughters Chris Ahrens Ronald Thompson of Crestwood and Karen Ahrens Fischer and her husband Christian Fischer of Newburgh, Ind.; and Laura Ann Ahrens of Louisville. She is survived by 11 grandchildren: Lisa Ahrens, Katie Ahrens, Ashley Ahrens Flynn, Gerry Ahrens, Andy Ahrens, Jennifer Ronald Tyra, Jessica Ronald, Michael Ronald, Hallie Fischer, Brice Ahrens and Abby Ahrens; two loving grandsons-in-law, Mark Tyra and John Flynn, and two devoted nieces, Mary Lou Brice Cowan and Kathy Brice DiRaimo.
