|Birth: ||Jan. 22, 1845|
|Death: ||Sep. 18, 1911|
From Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, Benjamin Brey is the father of my great grandpa's first wife, Sarah Alice Brey Storkey. He was the husband of Kate also known as Catherine. The couple had six children: Annie, Laura, Gertrude, Ida, William, and of course Sarah.
Based on his death notice and death certificate, his age works, and he was indeed a trolley worker as I know my Benjamin to have been. He died at St. Timothy's Hospital, Roxborough, Philadelphia PA of chronic nephritis (a kidney condition). His son William was the informant, and apparently did not know Benjamin's parents' names or where they or Benjamin was born.
Assuming it is our Benjamin, he appears at age 5 on the 1850 census with his apparent parents, Charles (a PA born farmer) and Mary Brey in Upper Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with probable siblings Moritz (7), Amanda (3), and Angoline (4 months). A piece of Rootsweb genealogy suggests his mother's maiden name may have been Maria Roth.
His middle initial of "R" above is taken from the 1910 census, the last one on which he appears.

On the last census on which Benjamin appears, he was living with a family, not his own, as a border, and the head of that family was (like him) a trolley conductor. His wife is not present in this household headed by Josephus and Eliza Jones at 8327 Ridge Avenue.
His final address as on his death certificate was not far away, at 8640 Ridge Avenue. Wondering who this might have been, I went through the 1910 census and found it belonged to the family headed by Margaret and Albert Tomlinson - and Albert is also a trolley conductor. It would seem as though these trolleymen were a tight knit bunch. Not only was Benjamin one, not only did he live out many of his last years living with two such men, but his son in law by his daughter Sarah was also one.
Interestingly, the 1870 census on Ship Lane in Roxborough, Philadelphia shows him with his wife and two daughters "Amey" (Annie?) age and Sarah age 1. My great grandpa who would later marry Sarah also was on Ship Lane for some of his life. Perhaps they met there and knew each other while young.
By 1910, I am unsure if Benjamin and Catherine/Kate were separated by choice or circumstance, but he wasn't widowed. On that 1910 census, Kate Brey is in Cell number 22 at the Philadelphia County Prison. It is definitely her as her age works, and the number of years married is a perfect 10 year difference from the last census, reporting six children born, five alive. Because of the cell number, we may surmise she was not an employee. Whether she committed a true offense, or was a debtor or a patient in a psychiatric setting is not known to me. It's hard to think that Benjamin might have passed away with his wife still incarcerated.
Benjamin bought Lot # 0513 on June 22, 1882. I believe he bought it on the occasion of a child's death in the family, probably daughter Ida May Brey. Boyd-Horrox funeral records for his daughter Sarah Alice Brey Storkey state she is buried next to "Baby 1882".
Just adding this so as not to be forgotten: Benjamin's son William had many children, so this man, Frederick H. Brey is his grandson. So is Edward Taylor Brey a child who died in less than a month. (William would later have another son he would name Edward in 1916.)
The 1920 census in Camden NJ shows Benjamin Brey's son William as having children
