Alfred J. Brey, 92, a long-time resident of Ripley and former business owner of the Copper Bowl Lanes, died on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.
He was born in Ripley on October 14, 1915 to the late John and Evelyn (Burit) Brey. After attending the Ripley schools, he graduated from Houghton High School.
Al took over his father's business, Brey's Bar (The Long Branch Saloon) in Ripley in 1942. He also drove delivery truck for the DX gas station in Ripley and was a structure painter for many years. He then opened the Copper Bowl Lanes in Ripley in 1961 and ran that business until he retired and sold it in 1980.
On July 27, 1940, he married Irene "Babe" Olive at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hancock. She died on May 15, 1994.
Al was a member of Church of the Resurrection in Hancock. He was also a league bowler for many years. He was once active in the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association and he sponsored teams and played in the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League. He enjoyed Yankee baseball and Lions football.
Besides his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, John and James; two sisters, Loretta Roth and Ruth Carlson; a great-grandson, Randall Heikkila.
He is survived by five children: Donald Brey of Florida, Richard Brey of Howell, Gary Brey of Ripley, Gail (Karl) Laajala of Hancock and a special daughter, Michelle "Mickey" Brey of Ripley; seven grandchildren, Jill Laux, Donna (Rudy) Moilanen, Terry Brey, Jennifer (Dale) Saarinen, Lori (Dennis) Heikkila, Cheryl (Gary) Cieczka and Stacie Ruska; 15 great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Wendy, Brittany, Ryan, Logan, Maari, Tarynn, Kailee, Hunter, Justice, Griffin, Ian, Jeffrey, Jamie and Alyson; a great-great-granddaughter, Sophie; and by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Fr. Sebastian Ettolil, MCBS to officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. The O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Church of the Resurrection in the name of Alfred Brey.
