Emilie Brenneman (1840-1933) was born at Hof Vetzberg, Kreis Wetzlar. The small district of Wetzlar, in the midst of Hesse-Nassau and Hesse-Darmstadt, belonged to the Rhine Province at this time, the westernmost province of the Kingdom of Prussia. She was daughter of Peter Brennemann (1794-1850) and Jacobine Holly (1797-1852).
In 1850 the family sailed from Le Havre to immigrate to America on the ship Admiral, arriving at New York on July 17. After arriving in New York the family travelled to Butler County, Ohio to settle. Only three months after arriving in America, Peter passed away on October 31, 1850. Soon afterward Jacobine Holly Brennemann moved the family to a farm in Putnam County, Illinois. Emilie was now 10 years old.
In 1869 at age 28 Emilie married Gustave Becker, age 35, originally from Giessen, Hessen Darmstadt. They had three children, Julius, Johanna, and Gustav. In 1879, after ten years of marriage, Gustave passed away. Two years later, in June 1881, Emilie and the children moved to Joplin.
Her name Emilie is likely an Americanization of the given name Emelia.
