Alice Dorothy Bengtson, 89, a resident of Hallock, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center.
She was born June 24, 1918 in Lancaster, MN. The youngest of five children born to Adolph and Freda (Larson) Bremer. She graduated from Lancaster High School in 1937 and then worked at the Lancaster telephone office as an operator.
Dec. 5, 1937 she married Leonard Bengtson on a very warm day at the Sion Lutheran Church parsonage in Lancaster. Alice and Leonard lived in North Red River for a short time and then moved to the family farm in 1939. They moved to Hallock in 1945.
Alice was a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hallock, where she was a member of ALCW and belonged to a morning Bible study group for many years. She loved to read and study Bible lessons. Her faith and commitment was visible in how she lived each day. Alice also enjoyed the sewing and birthday clubs she belonged to. She also was a cub scout den mother. She loved to sew, cook, bake, garden and kept her family well fed. The Bengtson home hosted many of the family holidays and celebrations over the years.
In 1975 Alice and Leonard started spending the winter months in Mesa, AZ where family and friends were always welcome. Alice will be remembered for her wonderful hospitality and her love for family and her Lord.
Survivors include her husband Leonard, sons James of Hallock; Phillip (Janelle) Bengtson of Kennedy, MN; a daughter Judy (Richard) Werner of Fergus Falls, Minn.; 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are 12 nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Carol Broadwell; , Helge Bremer and Algot Bremer and sisters Mabel Homstad and Ebba Wiberg.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 2 p.m. in Grace Lutheran Church at Hallock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Rev. Phil Tobin, presided. Special music provided by Karen Vold, soloist and Karissa Dennis, organist.
Pallbearers were Jordan Bengtson, Kris Werner, Kurk Werner, Dan Werner, Mark Tangquist and David Evans.
The Austin-Hughes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
