William Breford was born at Holland Indiana, June 12, 1855. He spent his boyhood days in Indiana. When but a lad he joined the Lutheran church and was a member of the church until the time of his death. When coming to Woods county in 1898, he settled on a farm southwest of Alva, which has been his home until the last year which he spent in Alva. Mr. Breford was one of the charter members of the local Lutheran church which was organized in 1899. September 22, 1881, Mr. Breford was united in marriage to Miss Louise Lubber. To this union ten children were born, two of whom died in infancy, the remaining eight make their homes in the vicinity of Alva. Mrs. Breford died Nov. 1915.
Mr. Breford has been in poor health for a number of years. He felt some what improved in 1923 and undertook to make a visit in Indiana, hoping that the change would be beneficial. The opposite proved to be the case and he was overcome by a stroke of paralysis. He was privileged to spend only a few days in health and broke down. In the spring of 1924 he was brought back to Alva on stretchers. Though reviving at first, his nerves were so badly wrecked that he was an invalid until his death. Those were wearisome days of waiting for his mind was so weak that he could not accept company. Now, however, he has been delivered from all pain and sorrow. Mr. Breford passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1926, in the presence of three children and his pastor. The days of his pilgrimage are numbered at 70 years, 8 months, and 11 days.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Lutheran church, Rev. W. H. Meyer officiating. The text, Rev. 7: 13-17 was used as basis for words of comfort and admonition. The body was laid to rest in the Lutheran church south east of Alva.
