Mrs. Julia Hogg

The Community was greatly grieved to learn of the passing away of Mrs. Julia Hogg, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. P. W. Muse, on the morning of March 14. She was the widow of the late William F. Hogg, our faithful and much beloved Superintendent of Schools in Gloucester for 19 years. She would have been 77 years old had she lived a few days longer, as she was born April 3, 1845, in Gloucester County.

She was the daughter of John Thomas Bray and Martha Hogg Bray, both natives of Gloucester.

She had been ill only six weeks, and all that loving hands and physician's skill could do was done; but her work in this life had been completed, so God called her home to be with Him in Heaven. She had been a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church since girlhood and was a consistant, faithful member up to the time of her death. She was so patient all through her illness; never murmured or complained of her suffering. Her youngest daughter, Miss Mamie Thomas Hogg, was constantly at her bedside and did all in her power to make her last hours comfortable. All of her children and children-in-law were faithful and devoted to the end.

She leaves to mourn their loss four daughters, one son, 4 grandchildren, one sister, and a large circle of friends. The children are Mrs. D. B. Lyle, of Edenton, North Carolina; Mrs. R. P. W. Muse, Mrs. Blanche Bray, Miss Mamie Thomas Hogg, of Gloucester County, and Mr. Edgar R. Hogg, of Norfolk; the sister Mrs. Mary Rolph, of Baltimore.

Funeral services were held at Abingdon Church on Wednesday, March 15, at 2 p.m., conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. E. DeShazo, assisted by Rev. H. L. Corr; and her body was laid to rest in the church cemetery by the side of her husband and children, who had preceded her to the Better Land. The active pall bearers were Messrs. Hayes Hogg, Jennings Hogg, L. B. Williams, Clinton Hogg, Harry Williams, and Homer Pitts. Honorary pall bearers Dr. James Clements, Messrs. Will T. Ashe, Henry Gibbs, Charlie Muse, Peachie Muse, and Albert Carmines.

In spite of the terrible condition of the roads and the pouring rain, the services were well attended. The wealth and beauty of floral tributes attested the extent and sincerity of her friends. Our hearts go out to the bereaved ones. May our Heavenly Father comfort them with the assurance that their loved one has departed to be with God. May the One who doeth all things well, heal the wounded and broken hearts.

Loved ones, she will come no more,
To hearts and love so true;
But she is at Heaven's gate,
Waiting and watching for you.
