Dr. Herman Harrison Braxton Sr., a family practitioner in Chase City for almost 55 years and a former town councilman, died Friday night, November 18, 1988. He was 82.
A native of Alamance County, N.C., he received his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina and his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Dr. Braxton was a member of the staff at Duke University from 1932-33 and at White Plains Hospital in New York from 1933-34.
He began his practice in Chase City in 1934 and was a member of the staffs of Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill and Southside Community Hospital in Farmville.
He had served as Mecklenburg County medical examiner and a surgeon for the Southern Railway. He was a fellow and charter member of the American Academy of Family Practice. Active in numerous civic endeavors, Dr. Braxton was a member of the board of directors of the Chase City Industrial Development Commission, the advisory board of Central Fidelity Bank and a member of the Chase City Bi-Racial Commission. He was also a former president of the Chase City Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Town Council from 1955 to 1963.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Grimm Braxton; a daughter, Anne Braxton of Athens, Ohio; a son, H. Harrison Braxton Jr. of Fredericksburg; and a sister, Mrs. Ruby Simpson of Alamance County, N.C.
Funeral service at St. John's Episcopal Church with burial in Woodland Cemetery.
