The long and fruitful life of Mattie Braxton Barbour came to a peaceful end on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Virginia.

Mattie was the daughter of the late Fleming Braxton and Louise Johnson Braxton of Columbia, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joe C. Barbour.

Mattie was a devoted and dedicated member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Browns Cove. She served faithfully in many capacities including Deaconess, Church Clerk and Chairperson of the Luncheon Committee. She was well known for her Faith in God; her caring, nurturing spirit; and her exemplary cooking skills.

She leaves to cherish her memory five children, Erick L. Barbour and wife, Debra, of Richmond, Virginia, Robin B. Alexander of Hampton, Virginia, Nadine B. Roper and husband, Herbert, of Livonia, Michigan, Paul D. Barbour and wife, Nancy, of Loudoun, Virginia, Bonita Barbour of Herndon, Virginia; six grandchildren, Kara C. Crump, Keisha Barbour, Michelle R. Brown, Steven D. Barbour, Joshua R. Barbour, Robin L. Barbour; two great-grandchildren, Kayla N. Crump and Taylor M. Crump; one sister, June Braxton of Englewood, New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Mary Barbour of Crozet, Virginia, and Daisy Braxton of Bronx, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends, all of whom will miss her.

Homegoing services were held Sunday, March 4, 2012, at the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Browns Cove, Virginia. Interment followed at the White Hall Cemetery.
