Emil Ladean Brauner was born September 15, 1936, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Emil and Louisa (Dasenbrock) Brauner. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and graduated from Creston High School in 1954. He grew up and lived most of his working life on the family farmplace in the house that was hand built by his father and great uncle in Sherman Township, Nebraska.

For many years, Ladean was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and later a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus.
