A native of Denver, MO, Worth County, Welby moved to St. Joseph, MO and remained a resident for 45 years. Welby and his wife, Mrs. May F. Smith Branson, made their home at 2101 Chambers Ave.
In 1970, Mr. Branson received the President's Award for 45 years of active service in business.
He was survived by his wife, Mrs. May F. Smith Branson; a son, Ervin Branson; a grandson, David Branson; a great grandson, David Anthony Branson; a brother, Dillard Branson of St. Joseph and Fenny Branson of Dallas, Texas,
and several other Bransons in the St. Joseph area. His mother, Mertie (Defield) Branson of Maryville, MO., and his father George Irvin Branson, preceded him in death.
Services were held at the Meierhoffer-Fleeman Chapel, Rev. Ted E. Akers officiating.
He was buried beside his wife, May Fern, in Memorial Park Cemetery and is located in the Rosehill Section, not far from the water faucet by the road.
(Please Note: When we were looking for Welby's grave, the staff at the cemetery gave us a run around and sent us to the wrong location three times. We spent hours looking for Welby's grave before another staff member finally found it. There was never an explanation as to why they sent us to two other areas of the cemetery, and we remain baffled.)
