He Was One of the Most Prominent Men in Columbus

Columbus, Ga., May 30 - Judge W. H. Brannon, who died in Atlanta this morning, was one of Columbus' leading citizens, and the announcement of his death has created profound sorrow here.
Judge Brannon had been ill for some time, suffering with a stomach trouble. A few weeks ago he went to Atlanta and entered "Robinson's sanitarium", on Capitol avenue, hoping thereby to improve his condition. He continued to grow worse, however, and for several days his condition has been so critical that his life has been practically given up by this friends and relatives.
Judge Brannon was 63 years of age. He was born in Harris county. For many years he has been a prominent citizen here, being actively connected with a number of the city's leading institutions. He was president of the Merchants and Mechanics bank, president of the Columbus Fertilizer company, vice-president of the Muscogee Ice company, treasurer of the Columbus Iron Works, president of the City Ice works of Augusta and interested as a director and stockholder in a number of other enterprises here. He has been president of the Merchants and Mechanics bank from April 22, 1872. Judge Brannon was a member of the law firm of Brannon & Hatcher, one of the foremost law firms here, the other member being Judge J. H. Martin. A few years ago he was a member of the well known law firm of Peabody, Brannon, Hatcher & Martin.
Judge Brannon was one of the most prominent and successful financiers of this city, and was well known over the state. He was a gentleman of many fine traits of character, who was held in high esteem by his friends. He was very modest, but there are many kind deeds to his credit which will live after him. He was always a friend of the young man, and many a struggling young business man has been helped over hard places and encouraged and sustained by good advice from Judge Brannon. The deceased is survived by three brothers - Judge S. M Brannon of Ridgeway, Ga., Mr. J. M. Brannon of Seale, and Mr. A. M. Brannon, who is a prominent druggist of this city.
The remains reached the city tonight and the funeral occurs tomorrow.
Judge Brannon was mayor Columbus in 1877 and was alderman here for quite a number of years. He was actively connected with the volunteer fire department, of which he was chief for a few years. Among other business enterprises, he was in the warehouse business a few years ago with B. E. Hatcher.
