Charles D Brandes was the son of Henry Sr & Phillipena Brandes. He was born in Prairie du Chien, Crawford Co., WI Siblings were Mary Elizabeth, Henry Jr., George C, Harriet and Frederick Charles.

Charles D was first married to Addie Rider on May 5, 1873. She would die giving birth to a son "Willie" on March 19, 1874. The baby died three months later. Addie and baby are buried together in Bridgeport Cemetery.

Charles then married Mary Jane Barrette - daughter of Charles and Emily Jane Dousman Barrette - on October 4, 1877, in St. Gabriel's Church, Prairie du Chien, Crawford Co., WI. They were the parents of Emily Gertrude, Violet Mae (Ray Calhoon) and her twin, Bertha Ellen who died at birth and Martha "Mattie" (Edward Ritenhouse).

Charles was employed as a station and ticket agent in the LaFarge area. His daughter - Emily Gertrude would follow in his footsteps.
