Mrs. Augusta B. Astholz, 81 years old, for 79 years a resident of Cape Girardeau, died from infirmities of age at 6:15 a.m. today at her home at 1417 Luce street. She had been failing in health for five years. Mrs. Astholz was one of the city's oldest residents, coming here when she was two years old. she was widely known in this city, and was one of the few older residents of the city who could recall incidents in connection with pioneer life of the region nearly 75 years ago.
She was from a generation of hardy German immigrants and had enjoyed good health all of her life until recently when feebleness overtook her. She was born in Brunswick, Germany, April 13, 1847, and come to this country when she was two years old with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brandes. She would have been 82 years old Friday. The family occupied a residence at 12 North Frederick street, where Mrs. Astholz lived until her marriage to Henry A. Astholz on Feb. 10, 1867. Astholz, who was for 30 years secretary to the Cape Girardeau Building and Loan Association, died five years ago.
Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Astholz moved to 501 Themis street, at which place all of their nine children were born. Mrs. Astholz was noted for her civic work in this city, being one of the charter members of the Civic Improvement League. She joined Trinity Lutheran church early in life, and was an active member and took much interest in the work of the Senior Ladies Aid Society of the church.
There are eight surviving children, five daughters and three sons. The daughters are Miss Mesie Astholz and Mrs. W.F. Smith of this city; Mrs. P.H. Adams, Crystal River, Fla.; Mrs. W.D. Godefroy, Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. Joseph Goldbaum, Toledo, Ohio. the sons are Arthur of this city, Alie of St. Louis, and Albert of West Palm Beach, Fla. Another son, Fred, died in 1902. A sister, Mrs. Anna Mueller, lives in this city. There are 24 surviving grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Only tentative funeral arrangements have been made, pending the arrival of a son, Albert, from Florida, who will come here. The services probably will be held Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Godefroy, a daughter had been here for six weeks, and another daughter, Mrs. Goldbaum, arrived Tuesday.
