Son of Solomon Jacob Brandeis, he is known to have had a sister, Rose, who was also born in Romania, but their mother's name is not known. Bernard and his father arrived in the US in 1890-1891.

While he consistently gives 1879 as his year of birth, on various census, passport, and naturalization documents Bernard reports the rest of his birth date as the 5th, 8th, 12th, and 14th of April--as well as the 1st of July.

He married (first) Rebecca 'Rae' Rosenblatt on 17 March 1903 at Manhattan, but by November of that year their marriage was over.

Dr. Brandeis became a naturalized US citizen on 27 June 1904 at the New York Supreme Court and ten days later was issued a passport, stating his intention was to return "within two years."

He next married Janetta Kleinberg (a.k.a. Josephine Brandell), a Galician whose family had immigrated to Manhattan in around 1898. An aspiring singer and actress, she married him on 15 Feb 1907, but her career ambitions soon separated them.

Bernard's last wife, Clara Winkler, appears to have brought him the peace and stability he sought. They wed in about 1917 and remained together until his death.
