Dorothy O. (Braley) Bothfeld died on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at the Skilled Nursing Facility at North Hill in Needham. She was 99 years old. Dorothy was the last surviving sibling of six children of the Braley family of Wellston, Ohio. After graduating from Oberlin College, she attended The Christ Hospital School of Nursing located in Cincinnati. She graduated in the class of 1930.
She was employed at the Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia, PA when World War II began and the national call for military nurses was issued. Dorothy volunteered for the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served from 1943 to 1945. She was stationed at a temporary medical unit in Northern Australia. During her service, Dorothy was the head nurse of the ward that accepted survivors of the Bataan Death March. She wrote personal notes to all the families of the service men who did not survive. Dorothy later published a riveting journal describing her war experiences.
Dorothy returned to Ohio where she met and married Walter O'Kane, PhD, a professor at the University of New Hampshire, in 1958. The lived in Durham, NH, until his retirement when they moved to their "Cabin in the Woods" in Wanalancet, NH. Winters were spent in rural Arizona where she supported his research and writings about Navaho life.
After Walter O'Kane's death Dorothy married Henry S. Bothfeld of Wellesley Hills in 1974. They lived in Wellesley Hills until his death in 1984. Summers were spent in Duxbury, MA. They were active members of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Wellesley Hills, where a memorial garden celebrates the Bothfeld family.
Throughout her life, Dorothy was drawn to the natural world. She found essential beauty in all aspects of nature. Her gentleness, insightfulness and sense of humor are treasures that she shared with everyone.
She is survived by her stepchildren, Martha Hartmann of Skillman, NJ, Edward Bothfeld of Scottsdale, AZ, Laura Tracy of Paoli, PA and Henry E. Bothfeld of Warner, NH. Step grandmother of 14. Also survived by nieces and nephews of the Braley family in Ohio, the O'Kane relatives and her devoted caregiver, Dorothy Ellis of Wellesley Hills.
Funeral services will be private. Interment will take place in Hendersonville, NC. Arrangements by the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham MA.
