James was the second of ten children born to William Henry "Hal" and Lucinda K. (Ellis) Bradshaw. He was the sescond of 10 children born to William Henry "Henry" and Lucinda K. (Ellis) Bradshaw. His siblings were: Leonard Alexander, Emma E., George Samuel, Laura Ellen, Rosa, Oliver Edward "Ollie," Dosha Ann, Hays Anderson, and William. On 18 December 1884, he was united in marriage to Minnie Ann Bowers. Sometime between October 1905 and April 1907, James, his wife and many of his 15 children moved to the Hext area of McCulloch County, where he farmed. His 15 children were William Thomas, Leonard, Joseph B., Lillie Mae, Jesse James, Alonzo Monroe, Beulah, William Jennings Brian, Rubin Samuel Stevenson, Bell (not Bill), Edward Warren, Raymond Clarence, John Henry, Claude Eugene, and Minnie Mae. His wife Minnie, a few of his brothers and spouses, some sons and thier wives, and a granddaughter rest with James at Hext.
