He served six years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Harlan graduated from Texas Christian University with a BBA in business management and accounting in 1949. He worked for Gulf Oil Corp. in the land department after graduation and later owned and operated a franchise of Greyhound Van Lines moving and storage business. He later sold the company and retired to help his wife, Bettye, with her venture into the health food business. They opened Sunflower Shoppe Natural Foods in 1969, now operating on Camp Bowie Boulevard. They retired from the Sunflower Shoppe in 1986 and sold it to their son Rick and wife, LaVonne Bradford. They now operate Sunflower Shoppe and Healthy Approach Market with their five children, Harlan and Bettye's grandchildren. Harlan's son and daughter-in-law introduced him to a lovely lady, Doris Martin of North Richland Hills, and they were married March 5, 2006. Harlan always said he felt so blessed for having two Christian ladies in his life. They loved life, danced often, traveled and took each day as a blessing.
Survivors: Wife, Doris; sons, Ken Bradford of Dallas and Richard Bradford and wife, LaVonne, of Grapevine; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
