BRADBURN, John, born 6 Jun 1775 in New Hampshire; said to have graduated from William and Mary College; moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; married Mary Churchman 8 Jul 1793 at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster; maintained a circulating library in Lancaster County from his personal book collection in the early 1800s; moved to Kentucky in the early 1800s but left because he did not believe in slavery; lived for a time in New Albany, Floyd, Indiana and Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio before moving about 1814 to Fayette County, Indiana Territory, where he owned a large farm; enjoyed studying nature, including botany and astronomy; maintained a fine garden, which was often visited by others because of its uncommon beauty; owned a telescope and could compute the distances of stars; said to be very aristocratic in his mindset, which made him unpopular with the masses of people in Indiana (though appreciated by those who knew him best); described as large and commanding in person with great muscular power and athleticism, standing six feet tall and weighing over two hundred pounds; a noted and eminent surgeon with a large practice; arrested in 1825 for the murder of two young men who were part of a group that broke into his house with the intention of tying him up and throwing him into a creek; jailed and tried for murder but found not guilty by reason of self-defense; moved soon thereafter to southern Indiana and later to Brookville, Franklin, Indiana; said to be a highly respected man of indomitable courage and great bravery, who possessed an inflexible will and great executive ability; died 21 Jan 1838 in Brookville Township; interment in Bradburn Cemetery in Brookville Township.
