Mrs. Violet Mildred (Brackin) Althouse
Violet Mildred Brackin Althouse, formerly of Parkesburg
The Althouse family is mourning the death of Violet Mildred Brackin Althouse who died at St. Anne's Retirement Community Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at the age of 97.
Violet was born on May 22, 1913, in Londonderry Township, Chester County, to the late Walter H. and Emma Burnite Brackin.
She graduated from Coatesville High School in 1931 and from the West Chester Normal School, now West Chester University, in 1935.
She was married to the late Paul Charles Althouse for 41 years. They lived in Cochranville and Parkesburg all their married life.
Violet was an elementary school teacher and principal in Atglen and also taught in Christiana and Parkesburg. Teaching was her vocation and passion and creating bulletin boards was her specialty. She retired in 1975.
Violet was very active for over 45 years at Parkesburg United Methodist Church in various capacities. She was currently a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Strasburg.
She was a member of Cochranville Chapter 347 Order of the Eastern Star for 63 years, serving twice as Worthy Matron. Violet loved to sing and participated for many years in the Lanchester Chorus. She spent her last seven and a half years living at Oak Leaf Manor Assisted Living in Landisville where she participated in many activities, especially bingo.
Violet is survived by daughters Patricia A. Thompson of Lancaster, widow of Fred R. Thompson and Janice A. Gray, wife of R. Ronald Gray of Red Lion; five grandchildren, Bret Thompson and companion Colleen Reilley of Gap, Tracy Thompson Irvine of Ephrata, Diane Gray Anderson, wife of Mark J. Anderson of Enola, Kerri Thompson Shindle, wife of Richard D. Shindle of Strasburg and Dana Thompson of Aspen, Colorado; great granddaughters, Kelsey and Kylee Shindle of Strasburg; sister-in-law Laura H. Brackin of Coatesville; and nieces and nephews. Violet always told everyone how much she loved her family and how proud she was of them.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde L. Brackin, Dr. Walter H. Brackin, Stanley B. Brackin and Marvin B. Brackin; grandson, Philip C. Gray and great grandson, Noel A. Thompson.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 18, at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, with Rev. Timothy J. Patterson officiating.
Interment will follow in the Cochranville United Methodist Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing, which will be held from 10 until 10:45 a.m., with Cochranville OES service taking place at 10:45.
