- Martha Jean Brackett Bates, 55, of Springfield, formerly of Taylorville, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
She was born Aug. 10, 1949, in Taylorville, the daughter of Theola R. and Ora Lee Bland Brackett Sr. She married Freddie Bates Sr. in 1969; he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bates was an executive assistant at Holiday Inn for 21 years. She was a member of Mae Fritz's Major Bowling Association and Women's International Bowling Association.
Survivors: son, Freddie (wife, Bonita) Bates Jr. of Springfield; two daughters, Patricia Bates of Springfield and Fredricka Bates (husband, Ronald Brown) of Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Theola (wife, Patti) Brackett Jr. of Springfield and L.C. (wife, Rosella) Brackett of Hillsboro, N.J.; six sisters, Viola Harris and Susie Beemen, both of Taylorville, Julia (husband, Jesse) Criag, Mary (husband, James) Ellington and Roberta (husband, David) Stapleton, all of Springfield, and Carolyn (husband, Albert) Hale of Brooklyn, Minn.; an aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, W.W. White Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Tiney Walker officiating. Burial: Camp Butler National Cemetery.
