Mustered into Co. B. 106th Illinois Volunteer Infantry at Lincoln, Illinois on 18 September 1862 as a private, along with his brother Aaron. The outfit was trained in Lincoln then sent to Columbus, Kentucky, where they joined the Army of Tennessee under General U. S. Grant.

Spent a period of time in the trenches during the siege at Vicksburg before heading to Arkansas where they were at Helena. He was mustered out at Pine Bluff, Arkansas on 12 July 1865.
