Carol Ann (Buol) Boyes, 67, of Dubuque, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, after a courageous battle with diabetes, surrounded by her loving family.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 1795 Jackson St., with the Rev. Ed Sheppley officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
She was born on July 29, 1940, in Dubuque, daughter of Donald C. Buol and Virginia R. (Harms) Buol, she was the oldest of seven children. Carol graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1958.
She married William (Bill) Boyes, the love of her life, on April 5, 1969, at First Presbyterian Church in Dubuque. Carol and Bill were happily married for 38 years and were devoted to each other and their family.
While a senior in high school, she worked after school for Earl Marihart at Central School. After graduation, Carol worked at John Deere Dubuque Works, Dubuque Container Co., Wm. C. Brown Publishing Co., O'Connor & Thomas Law Offices, and McGladrey & Pullen, from where she retired in 2003. She proudly served her country as a radio operator in the Navy.
Carol was a member of the Order of Rainbow for Girls and proudly achieved the highest rank of worthy advisor. She was very active in the Dubuque Women's Bowling Association, having served as secretary/treasurer for many years, for the association and her leagues. She and Bill were also very involved in the youth bowling program. She was inducted into the Dubuque Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2002. Carol and Bill spent many summers traveling with the Dubuque Colts Drum & Bugle Corps as chaperones and chief cooks and bottle washers.
She was actively involved with her church, Immanuel Congregational UCC, and served on many boards. She also served as church moderator. Carol was a faithful member of the choir and the bell choir, as well as being very active in the Women's Fellowship.
Carol loved to travel, visiting family and friends, exploring new and fun places. Disney World and Las Vegas, where she proudly boasted of seeing Elvis, were two of her favorites. She liked to play her lucky machines, which were Pom-Pei and Rich Girl, and was happy to tell you that she was a winner and Bill wasn't quite so lucky. But they had fun! They loved to camp and spent many enjoyable times at Governor Dodge State Park and at their campsite in Galena. Family get-togethers were especially important to Carol, particularly the holidays, and she always organized the Buol family Christmas caroling. She was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. Carol enjoyed a good game of cards and her card club group. Her passion was collecting Christopher Radko ornaments and her Christmas trees were a beautiful sight to behold. It was especially enjoyable for her to watch Bill hang them on the tree. One of Carol's favorite pastimes was watching the old "M*A*S*H*" reruns.
Carol's spirit of generosity was exceeded by none. She was a loving, caring and giving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, mother-in-law and friend. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her, but she will live forever in our hearts and memories.
