Her parents were Dr. Thomas Person Hawkins and Mary Frances Boyd.
Her name appears incorrectly on the death certificate as "Rodgers".
Mattie's first marriage was to Edward Fitzgerald in 1856 in Henry County TN. She and Edward had two children, Laura and Thomas. Edward was the son of Judge William Fitzgerald. According to the History of Tennessee and Tennesseans, vol. 7, Edward was a distinguished soldier in the Confederacy. The first to raise a company in Henry County, he was commissioned as a Captain. Later his company became part of the Fifty-fourth Sr TN Reg out of Memphis. He was promoted to Major and then Colonel. He died while leading his regiment into battle at Richmond Kentucky.
She next married Judge John A Rogers. This was also his second marriage. His first wife was Eliza Ann Rogers, his first cousin. He was a Unionist and during the Civil War was appointed Colonel by Abraham Lincoln** in the 1st Regt West Tennessee Infantry. Mattie filed for a widow's pension March 28 1892. Their son John A Rogers Jr and his wife Vera perished in an earthquake March 10, 1933 in Los Angeles California.
