On June 30, 1943 while delivering supplies at Guadalcanal, a Japanese torpedo hit the engine room of the ship, killing Charles and fourteen other crewmates. Later that day, after all hands had been safely evacuated, the ship was accidentally torpedoed by friendly fire and sunk.
He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Phillipines. He received the Purple Heart.
