Former Carrollton resident Mrs. Geraldine B. Alfeld, 79, of Alton died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton.

She was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Carrollton, the daughter of Edmund Landrum and Rosalia (Pegram) Bowman. Her ancestors were among the earliest pioneers of Greene, Bond and Madison counties, the earliest settling in Illinois in 1808. She married Jack Arlington Alfeld Dec. 28, 1945, at the home of her parents, and he died March 6, 1976, while serving as Greene County's resident Circuit Judge.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann Alfeld Flick and her husband Dr. William Flick of Burr Ridge; a son, Philip B. Alfeld of Alton; a grandson, Paul William Flick of Los Angeles; a niece, Dana Wiggins (husband Gary) Kinsey of Huntsville, Ohio; and a nephew, Jeffrey Bowman Wiggins of Tampa, Fla.; a great-niece and great-nephew, Brett and Conner Kinsey; a sister-in-law, Jean Alfeld Caselton of Carrollton; and a brother-in-law, William Alfeld of Carrollton.

Preceding her in death were a sister, Edna (Bowman) Wiggins; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Walter S. Wiggins.

Mrs. Alfeld graduated from Carrollton High School, the year Pearl Harbor was attacked. She went on to attend William Wood College at Fulton, Mo., and Shurtleff College in Alton. She also served with the Red Cross in New York City during World War II. The couple married after Jack was discharged from three years active duty in the Pacific with the U.S. Army. Together, they lived in St. Louis while her husband attended law school. They returned to their hometown of Carrollton in 1949. She spent the final eight years of her life in Alton, and was a lifelong member of Carrollton Methodist Church.

As per her request, there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Carrollton City Cemetery. She will be buried beside her husband and among other family members in the Pegram Family plot at the cemetery.

The Rev. Betty Coffey officiated at 11 a.m. graveside services Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, for former Carrollton resident Mrs. Geraldine B. Alfeld, 79, of Alton, at Carrollton City Cemetery. Rev. Coffey also read a eulogy written by Mrs. Alfeld's son, Philip, and a poem. "Amazing Grace" was played on bagpipes as a recessional.
