He was born in Burgin, KY, to the union of Dan King and Sue Poe Bowman. He had two sisters, Bertha Mae Bowman and Beatrice Bowman Penman.
He was an employee of Smith-Jackson Funeral Home and the Danville Monument Company.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Little Zion Baptist Church, and a church trustee. He was also a member of the Benevolent Lodge 3.
Survivors include; his wife, Eliza "Tat" McCowan; five daughters, Marsha McCornmack, Jacqueline Bowman, Vickie Mosley, Jackita L. Lancaster and Rene Smallwood; two sons, Steve Berry and Jack Antonio Bowman; two sisters; Bertha Bowman and Beatrice Bowman Penman; one step-son, Gary Shannon; two-step daughters, Angela Parker and Bonnie Blakey, and a number of grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
