Rev. Harold I. Bowman, 65, of Harrisonburg, Va., passed from this life to his heavenly home early on April 9, 2008, surrounded by his family, after a courageous 11-year struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on February 25, 1943, in Vienna, Va., to the late Beulah Alger Bowman Hoak and the late Wilbur I. Bowman. He grew up in Page County and graduated from Luray High School in 1961. In 1963, he married Kay Mumbert Bowman, who survives. Loving companions for 45 years, they experienced life's joys and sorrows always guided by the Lord's hand. Rev. Bowman graduated from Bridgewater College in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and religion. In 1968, he graduated from Bethany Theological Seminary, Oakbrook, Ill., with a master of divinity degree. Following seminary, he served six congregations throughout the United States. During his 37-year ministry, Rev. Bowman touched many lives, including those around him during his last 17 months at Bridgewater Home. He was active in the Church of the Brethren, having held leadership positions in both the Shenandoah and Virlina Districts. Rev. Bowman will be remembered for his deep faith in the Lord, his love for his family, and his obedience as a servant of God. He enjoyed life to the fullest, especially through traveling, gardening and hiking. He brightened many days through his dry wit, warm smile and twinkling eyes. Rev. Bowman used Philippians 4:11 13 as a guide for his own life.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and caring friend to many, he will be dearly missed by all who were blessed by his life. In addition to his wife Kay, he is survived by his children and their families, daughter, Darla Kay Deardorff and husband, Duane, of Durham, N.C.; and their children, Kaylee and Shaun; son, Darin Keith Bowman and wife, Karen, of Bridgewater, Va.; and their children, Peyton and Carter; and son, Devin Kent Bowman, of Harrisonburg, Va. He is also survived by his two brothers, Paul Bowman and wife, Sarah, of Bridgewater, and Leonard Bowman and wife, Louise, of Bluemont, Va. Preceding him in death were three sisters and a brother.
A celebration of Rev. Bowman's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, where he was a member. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will be held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens on Saturday, April 12, 2008.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Rev. Harold Bowman scholarship fund at Bridgewater College, 402 E. College Street, Bridgewater, Va. or to the Bridgewater Healthcare Foundation Resident Endowment Fund, 302 N. Second Street, Bridgewater, Va. 22812.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the staff of Bridgewater Home who cared for Rev. Bowman so lovingly for the last 17 months of his life, and to their many friends for the kindness and support shown to them over the years.
