Ava Mae Foland Bowlsby, daughter of Luster and Nettie Margaret Burchett Foland, was born May 13, 1917 on her grandparent's farm in Richland Township in Decatur County, Iowa. She died May 27, 2007 at Long Term Care in the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola at the age of 90 years.
In the spring of 1921, the family moved to a farm in Long Creek Township, Decatur County and Ava attended school at the Elm Grove School District 8. The family moved to a farm a few miles west of Osceola in Clarke County in the spring of 1932. Ava graduated from Osceola High School.
Ava married Pearl Bowlsby, December 23, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri. She worked at the Ordinance Plant in Ankeny for 2 ½ years until WW II ended. Pearl and Ava settled on a small farm near Osceola where their son, Keith was raised. There they had a herd of dairy cattle. Ava worked very hard, getting up at 4 A.M. and helped with the milking of the cows and then getting ready for work in Osceola. She was good at making pets out of cows and their calves. Ava worked at Snowdon's for 20 years and retired from the Clarke County Hospital on May 14, 1982 after working 14 years in housekeeping. She spent many happy years gardening, growing her flowers, which were very special to her and wanted everyone to take notice of them. She enjoyed crocheting and the farm life. She loved to sew and spent many hours making clothes for herself and others. After losing her eye sight, due to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, she moved to the Long Term Care facility in September 2002 in the Clarke County Hospital where she received excellent care.
Ava had accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was affiliated with Calvary Bible Church in Osceola. Prior to attending Calvary Bible Church, she attended Murray Bible Church, which is now Murray Baptist Church. She and Pearl were instrumental in getting the church started in the 1950s.
Ava was preceded in death by her husband, Pearl in 1987; brother, Arben Foland in 1991; sisters, Ruth Tucker and Ivene Johnson both in 2006; brothers-in-law; Elmer Tucker; George Ingraham; Frank Johnson; Clyde Bowlsby; Addison Bowlsby and Carl Bowlsby and sisters-in-law, Lois Bowlsby and Ardis Ramsey.
