Nellie Eureka Dix Bowers, 103, died April 6, 1998 at her home , The Gordon House, in Gordonsville. Born March 24, 1895 in Irvington, she was the daughter of Thomas Dix and Ada Webster Dix. After Attending the public schools in Lancaster County, she graduated in 1916 from the University of Maryland Hospital Training School for Nurses. She then pursued the nursing profession at the University of Maryland Hospital and at John Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore.
In 1922, she married George Hubert Bowers, and in 1924, they established their home in Norfolk, where Mr. Bowers founded the Dix-Bowers Company and Bowers Wholesale Corporation. Nellie Bowers was a founding member of the First Lutheran Church where she was an active member in the Rebecca Circle and the flower arranging committee, and a member of the Lockhaven Garden Club and of the Louise Eggleston Prayer Group of Ghent United Methodist Church.
Proceeded in death in 1987 by both her husband and eldest son, George H. Bowers, Jr., Nellie Bowers is survived by two sons, the Rev. Thomas Dix Bowers of Morehead City, N.C. and Cdr. John Pennington Bowers (USN, ret.) of Rochelle; her daughter, Patricia Bowers (Mrs. Luther W. White) of Palmyra; her daughter-in-law Mary Jane Brinson Bowers of Norfolk; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A funeral service was held at First Lutheran Church in Norfolk April 8. (Rappahannock Record - April 9, 1998)
