A lifelong resident of Licking County, he was born July 27, 1863, in McKean Township, the son of James R. and Ada (Gosnell) Bowers. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Chatham.
His wife, Mrs. Sarah Bowers, preceded him in death July 17, 1953, and surviving are three sons and a daughter: Harry and Roy Bowers of Newark, Fred of Highwater and Mrs. Wallace Carpenter of Newark; also 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs Elsie Rhodeback of Johnstown. A son Ralph is deceased, also one brother and four sisters.
The body is at the Gutliph & Henderson Funeral Home where the Rev. J. B. Rosemurgy will officiate at services at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be made in Fredonia Cemetery.
