Samuel Bowen Died Thursday, July 23
Had Lived in Mills County 59 years; funeral held Friday afternoon
Samuel A Bowen , well known resident of the North Grove neighborhood southeast of Hastings, died early Thursday morning after a short illness of heart trouble.
Mr Bowen had lived in Mills county since 1872 or nearly 60 years and was a familiar figure in and about Hastings.
Funeral services were held in the Comer funeral home in Emerson, Friday afternoon under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of which he was a member. Rev J F Steele of th Emerson Baptist church preached the sermon. Mr and Mrs J N Cheney and Miss Ruth Cheney as accompanist sang.
Burial was made int the North Grove cemetery near his late home and was in charge of the Masonic lodge who gave the beautiful ritualistic service of the order. The pallbearers were : H E Greenwood, Roscoe Greenwood, Frank Oglevie, Vernon Hicks, R E Good, and Paul Carson.
Samuel Arthur Bowen was born in Harrisonville, Mo, Aug 30, 1863 and departed this life July 23, 1931 at the age of sixty-seven years, ten months and twenty-three days.
Mr Bowen came with his parents from Missouri and settled in Iowa in November, 1872, and has been a resident of the vicinity of Hastings since that time. His occupation was that of farming.
He took his Master's Degree in the Masonic lodge at Emerson in 1906 and was a member in good standing of Humanity lodge No 378 A F and A M at the time of his death.
Mr Bowen was the last of a family of four children, two brothers and one sister preceding him in death.
The relatives living consist of three nephews and five nieces as well as other more distant who together with a goodly number of friends mourn his death.
