Ruth was the only child of Oliver and Minnie (Scott) Hughes. She married Gordon Bowen in 1926. They were the parents of two sons, Malcolm (Mac) and Melvin (Mel).

She was a native of Hendricks County, Indiana, and a member of the Spencer (Indiana) Christian Church.
Survivors: a son, Mel Bowen; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
