Garfield, Ga. - Mr. James Matthew "J.M." Bowen Jr., age 74, died Sunday, January 16th, 2011, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility in Statesboro. The Candler County native lived most of his life in Emanuel County. He was a 1954 graduate of Portal High School and served in the National Guard for two years. Mr. Bowen was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of the Poplar Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was the church clerk for 41 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Matthew Bowen Sr. and Aleatha Sparks Bowen.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Quillene Garrison Bowen of Garfield; a sister, Luree Bowen of Winder; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Nancy Bowen, John and Brenda Bowen and Sam and Jennifer Bowen, all of Garfield. Several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, January 19th, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Elder Sam Bowen officiating.
The body will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Billy Bowen, Jackie Anderson, Lee Baird, Joe Stuckey, Wayne Harper and Rafe Newton.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 4700 Poplar Springs Church Road, Portal, Ga. 30450; or Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459.
