Death: Aug. 13, 2011

Miriam Elizabeth Bowen Fulgham is the daughter of the late Myrtis and G. B. Bowen of Register, Ga. She lived over 50 years in Savannah before moving to Sugar Hill, Ga. to live with her son and daughter. Miriam was a graduate of Nevils High School, and attended Valdosta State College. In the summer of 1942, she accepted an invitation to join a government training program in electronics and physics to support the armament efforts of World War II. After completing the initial training, she was selected for advanced training, first at Georgia Tech, and later at Wright Field Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. At Wright Field, she was promoted to Supervisor on the Top Secret team developing high-altitude radar for the bombers of the Manhattan Project. She returned to Bulloch County for Christmas in 1945, and remained to help her parents with their businesses.

After moving to Savannah, she continued to work in the grocery business for many years. Miriam was known for her quick wit, positive outlook on life, and in her younger years, as a sharp shooter. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting. She dearly loved her family and friends, and always had an encouraging word for others. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially Sadie Dog, who learned from Miriam how to wipe her feet before entering the house.

Surviving are her children: Chuck Wilkinson, Pamela Wilkinson-Nichols, a son-in-law, Alan Nichols, a grandson, Joseph Nichols, a foster grandson, John Acosta, three sisters, Martha B. Hutchinson, Jackie B. Foy, and Ann B. Lupton. Additional survivors include four nephews, Inman Foy, III, George Hutchinson, Craig and Shawn Mikell, two nieces, Gail Foy, and Holly Pollard, nine great nieces and nephews, a number of cousins, and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 36 years, Joseph Bruce Fulgham.
