Elma was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon where she loved attending and reading her bible. She enjoyed working outside and family reunions.
Elma Bowdler, 93, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 8:50 A.M. on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at St. Mary Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
She was born on March 3, 1917 in Leatherwood, Kentucky the daughter of the late Boyd and Minnie (Adkins) Riddle. She married John Henry Bowdler on October 18, 1933 in Cumberland, Kentucky and he preceded her in death on May 19, 1968.
Surviving family members include her daughter: Betty Ruth Winkler and husband James A. of Bluford, Illinois; son: Rick Bowdler and special friend Jeanne Prange of Radom, Illinois; 28 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister: Nellie Halcomb of Detroit, Michigan; brother: Dave Riddle of Lincoln Park, Michigan; 5 daughter-in-laws: Carol Bowdler of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Karen Bowdler of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Germaine Bowdler of Texico, Illinois, Sylvia Shehorn of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Dorothy Weller of Springfield, Illinois; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Her parents, husband, four sons: Jimmie, Sydney, Kenneth and Jerry Bowdler, brother: Creed Riddle and infant brother: Willie Babe Riddle, sisters: Thelma Caudle, Hazel Brown, Bonnie Newcomb, Nola Shedderly preceded her in death.
VISITATION: was held from 5 to 8:00 P.M. on Monday, August 9, 2010 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. FUNERAL SERVICES: were held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Reverend Chuck Ellis officiated. INTERMENT: Hopewell Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois. For those who wish, memorials may be given to Park Avenue Baptist Church or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864.
