William R. Bowden, 76, of Delphos, died at 7:21 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2002, at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima.
He was born December 18, 1928, in Lima, the son of the late Forest and Malinda (Wooten) Bowden. He first married Eloise Marshal, who passed away June 9, 1972, he then married Lucille (Calvelage) Maas on March 14, 1973, and she survives in Delphos.
Mr. Bowden retired from Ford Motor Company in 1989 after 32½ years of service. After retiring from Ford, he worked at Eagle Print in Delphos, then started his own pallet company. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Delphos, Knights of Columbus Chapter 1362, was a Bishop Newman Assembly Knights of Columbus 4th degree, belonged to Lima Lodge 54, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and Lima Eagles Aerie 370. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 in Lima and Legion Post 268 in Delphos and belonged to the Ford Retirees of UAW Local 1219.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1944 until 1947. While in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Philippine Sea, the USS Ranger and the Salarno Bay. In 1947, he went with Admiral Byrd on an expedition to Antarctica and then served in the Ohio National Guard from 1947-1952. He was then called into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served from 1952-1953.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three stepsons, Mark Maas and Timothy (Kris) Maas, both of Fort Jennings, and Robert (Sally) Maas of St. Marys; four stepdaughters, Diane Hile of Napoleon, Katherine (David) Powers of Louisburg, Pa., and Agnes Maas and Barbara Truesdale, both of Delphos; a brother, Edward (Joyce) Bowden of Lima; 23 stepgrandchildren, and 20 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Carol (Maas) Green Seibert; a stepgrandson, Darrel Green Seibert, and a brother, Wendle Bowden.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Delphos, with Father Vincent Hoying officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Harter & Son Funeral Home in Delphos, where a rosary service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday and a parish wake service held at 7:30 that evening.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rita's Dialysis Unit or St. John's School.
