Mossie was born as a premature infant on one of the coldest winter days on November 8, 1916. She grew up in Oakwood, Texas, the youngest of eleven children. After her parents moved to Houston, her father died in 1923. She met her husband while at Reagan High School. After their marriage in 1937, she worked as a sales lady at Akin Pharmacy until 1953 when she and her husband started a floral business, which they ran until 1982.
