A son of Andrew & Demaris Reese Bourland, Benjamin was born in Trigg County, (Christian County?) KY. He married Julia M Preston in St. Louis on Nov. 20, 1849. They had sons Ogden Phelps & Rudolphus Rouse. After Julia died in 1867, he married Clara Parsons on Jan. 17, 1869. With Clara, Benjamin had daughters, Caroline and Elsie; and sons Benjamin, Norman, Philip, and Robert. His wives' last names are included on their stones.
