Born in Speen, Berkshire, the only son of Captain Charles Bourchier and wife Fanny, he was educated at Eton and Christchurch, Oxford, where he developed an interest in acting. In 1889, he played Jaques, with Lillie Langtry in "As You Like It" and later as Robin hood in Alfred Tennyson's "The Forresters". He had a notable success as the title character in "Henry VIII" and in 1902, appeared in command performances before King Edward VII, in "Dr Johnson" at Sandringham and the "Merchant of Venice" at Windsor.
