Alfred R. Boulden, Sr.
Mr. Alfred R. Boulden, Sr., age 84, of New Castle, DE, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 1, 2009, after living a wonderful and complete life.
Al was born in Wilmington, DE on December 9, 1924 to Freal H. Boulden and Lillian (McGuiggan) Boulden. On January 31, 1943, he was united in marriage to Mary M. Thomas of Thomson, Georgia.
Al was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country proudly during World War II. He was a member of the Allied Forces who stormed Normandy Beach at age 19 and fought his way across Europe to Berlin at the end of the war. He was also part of a unit who freed prisoners in a concentration camp.
Al returned from the war to reunite with his wife, Mary. They moved from Georgia to Delaware where they started a family that grew to four children.
His friends and employers remember Al as a hard-working man. His employment over the span of 50 years included milkman, telegrapher for the Pennsylvania Railroad, auto mechanic, owner of a cab company, Sales Manager for Brown & Scott Meats, and Sales Manager for Del Campo Baking Company. Retirement allowed Al time for woodworking and he became a maker of cabinets and furniture. He also became an expert in lawn mower repair, which neighbors greatly appreciated.
His children remember their father as a handy man who could fix anything. He could build houses, repair cars, and fix all sorts of electrical, carpentry, and plumbing problems. Most of all, they remember their Dad as a loving husband and provider who wanted his kids to have more than he had. He set a wonderful example of how to love your wife and ensured that they respected their mother.
Al faced the challenges of pancreatic cancer with a calmness and serenity that inspired friends and family. As friends came to comfort him, he shared the blessed assurance of knowing his Maker. He would then ask if they had accepted the same Good News. Though he was ravaged by this disease, he felt the kindness and goodness from the grace of God.
Al is survived by his sons, Alfred Jr., John W., and James T.; 6 grandchildren, J.T. Boulden, Brooke L. Buss, Brandie A. Sparrow, Blake R. Boulden, Scott M. Boulden, and Jesse A. Boulden; 10 great grandchildren, Scott Boulden, Jr., Morgan Turner, Dresden Boulden, McKenna Buss, Tyler Sparrow, Meghan Buss, Christian Boulden, Brendan Boulden, Madison Sparrow, and Aubrey Buss; his aunt, Naomi Wrightson, and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Thomas) Boulden, and his daughter, Kathy Ann Boulden.
A time of visitation and support will be held at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 2220 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, on Thursday, August 6, from 5-7 pm. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Friday, August 7, at the funeral home, where visitation will begin again at 9 am. Al will be laid to rest following the funeral service at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, Delaware, and a reception to thank friends and family will be held in Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Seena Magowitz Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 5393 Wesleyan Drive, Ste. 104, Virginia Beach, VA 23455 (602/524-7636) to help find a cure for pancreatic cancer.
