Fr. Ed was born on May 10, 1941, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Grace Mary McGinn and Charles John Botkin. He graduated from Assumption High School in Davenport in 1959. He served honorably in the U.S. Army three years, three months and 21 days. He graduated from St. Ambrose University in 1969. He was ordained to ministry in the Davenport Diocese on May 26, 1973. He earned a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Catholic University of America and a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, Italy.
He was associate pastor of St. Mary's in Fort Madison from June 1975 to May 1976. He was pastor of St. Joseph's in Sugar Creek from September 1981 to September 1990. He was pastor of Immaculate Conception in Petersville from March 1982 to June 2006. Fr. Ed was currently serving as pastor of St. Patrick's in Delmar and St. Anne's in Welton, since October 1992 to the present, and was a full time assistant professor of Scripture and biblical languages at St. Ambrose University in Davenport since August 1980.
Survivors include two brothers, John (Phyllis) Botkin of Marion, Iowa, and Chuck (Sue) Botkin of Princeton, Iowa, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and one sister, Ellen Botkin.
