Growing up in the Brady Bunch House only needed a laugh track from a sit-com. I was never dull with seven kids in one household. He moved out at 19 and put himself through college. Eric became an EMT and then a firefighter as well as a paramedic giving many hours and years of dedicated servie to the department. Eric also worked in Arson Investigations for a while. He rose quickly and had just taken his Engineers test.
In 2007, Eric was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer (GMB - GioBlastomaMelform) that he battled bravely and agressively for two years. He survived a small stroke and 5 operations plus chemo and radiation therapies. Eric spent all his remaining time with his wife and son giving them all he could in the time he had left. Eric loved his wife and son dearly and had a most extrodinary life, full of love, happines and career advancement.
In Nov 2009, Eric was told by his Dr's that there was nothing more they could do so after much thought, discussion and prayer, he decided to end treatment which had started to limit his qlity of life. Up until this time Eric was almost fully functional with just a few small physical and speech limitations. On Dec 27 2009, at his home in Temecula, California, he shared with his wife and son, he passed away with his family and his mother present. Dianna was holding his hand when he took his last breath. He has regressed quickly once he stopped treatment and the aggressive growth of his cancer.
The Riverside Fire Department had a huge Memorial Service for him with over 20 fire stations and trucks involved in a mile-long solemn processional march led by his wife, Hallie and son, Hunter who had a received a leather helmet, (a duplicate of his father's) in his honor from the Riverside Fire Department. The memorial was attended by over 2000 people, friends, family, co-workers and firefighters. Two additional memorials were held in Scaramento, California (State) and in Colorado Springs, Colorado (National) in which his name was etched on 2 memorial walls honoring him for his life and service to the fire departments and who had died while in their service.
His cancer was suggested to be caused by smoke inhalation from fighting numerous 'dirty' fires that were considered to be more dangerous than the wood and material fires from the past. Electronics, chemcials, plastics, synthetics and modern incinderarys had somehow entered his brain giving him a death sentencce.
Eric Carl Botkin lived an almost perfect life. His love and devotion to his family was oustanding and an example to others. His faith in God was also a huge comfort for him and his family. Eric had attened 9 years of a private Lutheran School until going to public high school where he continued to excelled in all subjects.
Eric is sorely missed by his extended family, friends and co-workers. He wrote a personal on-line blog, (myunknownjourney) several times each week for the two years he was battling cancer inspiring others of his deep faith, love and decication. Eric had hoped to pass along encouragement, hope, faith and love to others, no matter what they suffered from. His wife Hallie was given a reprinted bound book of all his entries, a legacy he left for all.
